The towering steeples of First Lutheran Church have long been a landmark as well as a beacon of welcome. Located in Haight Village, First is a historic landmark of this Swedish Village, but also of Rockford. As the Swedish settlers arrived and began to build their homes and establish themselves in their new country, with that came the importance of their faith and building a church where they could gather to worship.
First Lutheran Church was founded January 15, 1854, the mother church of the Lutheran Churches in Rockford. We continue to be the presence of a deeply-rooted faith, carrying on traditions of fine worship and hymnody, both from the early church as well as new composers, new liturgies, and global music.
We continue to be transformed by God through the work of the Holy Spirit, and our mission is to serve our community as well as our congregation, and also the global church throughout the world. As an inner city church, we work to transition with the changing culture, and revitalize a community that faces many challenges. We are faithful witnesses to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the command to love our neighbors.
We hope that you will visit our beautiful historic cathedral-like church, to enter into the beauty of the sanctuary, and the glorious sounds from the sanctuary with great music and faithful sharing of God’s story in Word and Sacrament. We welcome you to “Come and See!”
Serving in Christ,
Rev. Jane McChesney, Pastor
